Is This Generation The Last Generation Of Christians?

What if this was the last generation of Christians?

The statistics all over the Internet say the same thing about the state of the church in America. The church is dying. The numbers of those who count themselves among God’s children have drastically declined over the last 4 decades. What is happening? The most recent poll shows that a staggering 30% of youth in America have never attended a church service. That is nearly a 1/3 of the population of our youth! Is it true that this generation is the last generation of Christians? It is hard to look at these sobering statistics and not wonder.

The church was called by Jesus to go and preach the gospel. What are we not doing that would make more of a difference? Is Jesus not interesting to people anymore? Is the church failing to disciple our youth properly?

The Last Generation Of Christians Will Be Caused By The Previous One

How did we get here? If you want to know how to end Christianity in America, it is best to look at how the Israelites walked away from the Word of God. Consulting 1st and 2nd Kings bears much information on how the church can easily get here.

Solomon was the king we know for having much wisdom when it came to the things of God. We also know he did what he was told not to do in that he married women from other nations in 1 Kings 11. The warning was clear to Solomon, and yet he disobeyed. Why he disobeyed is unclear, but what we do know is that he was engaging in business relationships with foreign kings. Could this have led to his downfall? He also acquired great wealth and had a penchant for expensive things. Was his love of material things what caused his demise?

Was he given to the flesh in that he pursued women he knew he was not called to marry? Perhaps it was all three. What we do know is that Solomon stopped inquiring of the LORD. He started chasing after the things that were never meant to satisfy him. The result was this once great king worshipping other gods. His legacy created kings after him that did the same. The Word of God became hidden in the house of God for many years. And no one went looking for it either.

The kings that came after him had only hearsay to reference what our God wanted from His people. How sad it was that the great nation of God’s children ended up looking like everyone around them in such a short period.

The Church Must Put The Word Of God First Again

It was not until 2 Kings 22 that we see that the Word of God returned to the people of God. Josiah was a righteous man. He did what was right in the sight of God, but it was not until Hilkiah found the Word of God in the House of God that he understood what God had to say to His people. What was his reaction? He tore his clothes in grief.

Josiah’s generation could have easily been the last. We need to see the possibility of the last generation of Christians as a reality we must turn the tide on.

What value is the Word of God to the church of America? It is a question we must ask ourselves. Until we understand that the Word of God is all we have, we will try other ways to understand who God is. That is where the youth of the world are today. They are looking to everything and everyone to be their god and tell them how to live a good life. The Word of God has been hidden from them in the House of God. Are we going to bring it to them so they understand? If we want the youth of this generation to pay attention to God’s word, then we have to let them hear it and reason it out for themselves. Jesus is waiting for us to go, as He said when he proclaimed The Great Commission.
